When you give to CROSS, it is fair to ask a simple question: where does the money actually go? The honest answer is that we are deliberately careful with it — because the most valuable thing a small charity can do is fund the work that nobody else will.
We fund people first
The largest share of what we raise supports researchers: PhD students, research fellows and clinician-scientists at the start of their careers. Funding a person is not a cost — it is an investment in skills, ideas and careers that go on to deliver gains in patient care for years to come.
We unlock larger grants
Donations also pay for the pilot projects and preliminary data that competitive national and international grants demand before they will invest. In practice, a modest amount of philanthropic funding can unlock many times its value in further research support. Your generosity is the resource that unlocks the rest.
We buy the tools that research depends on
Some of what you fund is tangible. Money raised through our community and our Friends of CROSS supporters has helped purchase essential equipment in the Department of Surgery at St James’s Hospital — instruments that entire research teams rely on every day.
In short, your donation funds
- Student stipends — keeping talented researchers on the work.
- Pilot projects — the first results that prove an idea is worth pursuing.
- Laboratory equipment — shared infrastructure for the whole department.
- Outreach — bringing research to schools, patients and the public.
Accountable and patient-focused
CROSS is a registered Irish charity (RCN 20052850 · CHY 389874). We are transparent about how funds are prioritised, and every contribution — large or small — goes towards better outcomes for patients with cancers of the oesophagus and stomach.
